A date with the beast

Yeah, a real big beast. A camera I’ve always wanted to own but never managed to bring it in as shipping gonna cost a lot due to the weight. It weighs around 2kg and it’s huge! It’s often referred to as a ‘SLR on steroids’ and was produced from 1984 to 1987 in Ukraine. Managed to find one in very good condition locally and lugged it out for a test today using a roll of Ilford XP2.

The joke of the day was that I forgot that this camera uses DIN rating instead of ISO and I was lost when it came to setting the film speed. So I ended up taking a risk with my lousy exposure guessing skill (yeah, Sunny 16 to me sounds like some cocktail name) and glad the photos turned out pretty ok. I kinda like the camera except for the weight and the loud ‘clank!’ from the shutter. From now on … I’ll have to write these down and stick ’em at the back of the camera …

ISO 50 = DIN 18 ISO 100 = DIN 21 ISO 200 = DIN 24 ISO 400 = DIN 27 ISO 800 = DIN 30

Here’s a simple photo to show the ‘giant’ compared to a roll of 35mm film …
