SX1 IS : Test shots

It was at the zoo last Monday that I got the opportunity to ‘test’ the 20x zoom performance of the Canon SX1 IS I bought recently. As usual, I was spending more time playing with Fitzand and only managed to squeeze in few shots.

Ain’t someone who pixel peep or fussy about details, so I’m pretty satisfied with the results. At least they seem better than those I took years ago using some el-cheapo tele lens on my DSLR.

Someone asked what was the deciding factor that I ended up with the SX1 IS. Hmm … perhaps the convenience of having a 28mm at widest focal length, a 20x zoom (though I don’t think I’ll really need it, since I ain’t got no intention to visit the zoo often or go birding … and I hate doing street shooting by hiding somewhere with a long tele) and of course the HD video capability. Eeeks! Talk about that … I’ve yet to edit the HD video clips I took of the New Year eve fireworks!

Don’t see many reviews of this camera yet, though there are like million of threads in forums discussing it and comparing it with some other recent cameras. I don’t think I’m qualified to do any review about this camera as I’m quite easily satisfied (what do you expect someone who loves the Diana camera?) but I can list a couple of things that I think can be improved.

* Purple fringing can be see in some of those photos, especially at full tele. Happens under certain lighting condition.
* Supplied neck strap too damn short!
* No filter thread … though this ain’t too big a problem to me, since I hardly use filters … but at least I can screw in an UV filter to protect the front of the lens

I ran auto level on these photos above and applied 15% sharp sharpen in Photoshop after resizing them.
