Most of you will know that I love my Olympus E-P1 lots and not too long ago when its little brother … the E-PL1 was launched … I did mention that it looks ugly and ain’t too interested about it. A friend recently bought a black E-PL1 and told me that it “doesn’t feel solid enough” … compared to a DSLR(???!!!). I tried not to laugh. Why in the world would anyone try compare the feel of using that entry level ‘grown up point and shoot’ with a DSLR? I won’t even wanna compare an E-P1 with a DSLR. They are just too different.
Anyway, he is considering selling it but lent it to me to have a ‘feel’ of it … to see if I am interested. Oh gosh! So I held that baby in my hands and somehow after a while … it seem to feel pretty good! It could be because this one is black in color. The other day when I held a white one in the shop … it felt very plasticky. Hmm. My eyes must be fooling my brain! Hahaha! It does feel a lot lighter compared to the E-P1 and the size ain’t really to much different from the E-P1.
I’ve yet to really ‘test drive’ it but here are some random snapshots I took just for fun. Played a little with the art filters too. These test shots are not post processed (aka no Photoshop) and are only resized for web.
An online review by SteveHuff Photo … ‘The best JPEG camera ever?’ made me wanna check out how this affordable camera perform but then … I ain’t too fussy about my photos, so how do am I suppose to know if it works well? Hahaha!

The Pop Art filter mode … wild vivid colors! Works well but not on all subjects.
Grainy black & white mode is pretty fun. I’ve never tried it on my E-P1 and guess I should!
The pinhole mode. Well … it’s just like adding some vignetting to the photos.
The Diorama mode … hmm … maybe I need to find better scenes (higher up) to get proper photos.
The soft sepia tone mode … which is so darn boring! A little bit of contrast/curve adjustment will definitely do some good. The default is way too … zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
I’ll try to find time and do a E-P1 and E-PL1 comparison while this cammie is still in my hands. Stay tuned! So far I think … as n E-P1 user … there are things I miss like the scroll wheels but I’m getting used to it after a while.
The b/w and diorama mode looks appealing to me. : )
@Vonz : B&w seems fun but the diorama … I ain’t too sure. Not sure if it will always be the same level of ‘blur’ for the top & bottom. If it is, I think it will be quite boring after a while when all pics look pretty similar. Not very sure. Too bad they took out the cross process filter which was in the E-P2. Not sure why. Hmm.
Buy! Your display looks empty after having s bigger space 😛
Just curious…can the lens on this junior be changed like the big brother?
@Jer : Well my dry cabi is very empty now after I sold off my DSLR and a lens. A couple more lenses to go and the cabi will be pretty bare. 😀 Yeah the lens on the E-PL1 can be changed like the E-P1/2.
Wah…saying bye bye to DSLR and lenses….
@Jer : Yeah. I can’t take good photos, so a DSLR is just for show 😛 So now it’s goodbye til I find something cheap to let my Lensbabies come out to play again.
i too cant take good photos hence off my dslr and 4 lens, all sold.. better off with a PnS for me 😛
Just curious, would/do you ever sell any of your cameras? I’d sell some of mine but they’re not worth much if anything at all. I know it’s not completely relevant sorry.
@Neil Doocy : Hahaha! I do sell of my cameras sometimes, especially digital ones. After some time that is. The only one I won’t sell is probably the E-P1. Not sure why but it somehow is going to stay. These digital stuffs lose their values like crazy!

Very natural shots indeed. Love the grainy B&W art filter from my E-P1 too.

The sepia from the cammy is very bad. And, x-process in PS is pretty good, I find. Just need to run the script. ;P

@SADO : That small bag/pouch? I bought it from one of those push cart thingie in a mall some time ago. I remember the shop/brand was some FEB 2.9 or something like that. I love it but too bad the strap/sling is of those crappy material. If only it was leather too. 🙁
