When Old Meets New

Dug out a beautiful condition Canon IVsb rangefinder camera from my cabinet just the other day to give the (cloth) shutter some workout. This time I loaded a roll of cheap expired negative to give it another round of exercise but managed to only shoot 4 shots. Hahaha! Damn. I have a big problem with the tiny viewfinder on that super old and cool looking camera.

Suddenly I got an idea to put that camera + lens to better use. I can use that lens on my E-P1!!! I’ve read that the Canon 50mm f1.8 LTM lens is a great performer … so I should better put it to more use instead of letting it retire in my dry cabinet. Popped by this shop what specializes in rangefinders and got myself a M39 to M43 (micro four thirds) adapter and soon that old cool lens was attached to my E-P1. The guy at the shop saw my IVsb and lens and was telling me how good condition they are and I should be keeping them. Hmm. Keep them for?

Too bad the adapter is black and somehow spoils the look of the combo.

This small sized lens is heavy! No joke. Now my E-P1 can’t ‘stand’ by itself with the lens attached.

My lens even comes with an original old Canon 40mm filter that someone told me is pretty hard to come across! Maybe I should go eBay and see if I could fetch a few hundred bucks with it. Hahaha! It’s only 6pm and I’m dreaming!

Looks neat with my white/gold E-P1 eh? No? Nevermind.

I just found enough time for some super random test shots. Well it was more to test if my old fuzzy eyeballs could focus properly perhaps. Anyway, as those E-P1 users know … the manual focusing on the E-P1 is a little troublesome. Having to press the OK button to enlarge the view (to assist MF) and then again to set it to original size is quite a pain in the ass. Anyway … here are the test shots. Most of them taken at high ISO and I didn’t bother running them through noise reduction. Hmm … I hardly bother to do that anyway. 😛

The toughest test subject … as he ways always moving. I had only 3 well focused shots out of maybe 15. Hahaha! Stick to auto focus for children photography!

To be honest … I originally had some thoughts of selling the Canon IVsb and this lens away but now … I’m undecided. I kinda love this lens but I have big problem shooting with the Canon rangefinder. Argh. I’ll put off making a decision to maybe a later date now. I enjoy playing with the manual focussing and looking forward to get some decent shots with the combo.

  1. @shunzi : For real? Hahhaa! I have another person who told me he’s interested in grabbing it. *ndroo looks at mijonju*. Hahaha!

  2. @Mike : You mean the shop where I found my adapter? It is Chiif Cameras at Excelsior Shopping Complex at level 2.

  3. @Mijonju : I’ve not seen the f2 version before. I’ll go Google it. Hahaha. It’s gonna be 2010 soon. Time for you to prepare a list of 50 cameras to buy for the new year okay? 😛

  4. @shunzi : For real? I am seriously thinking of letting the body go coz I can’t use the viewfinder well (ya with specs on it’s tough!). Drop me a message with an offer and I’ll definitely consider. Really. No joke. If it is reasonable … I’ll let it go instead of keeping it in my cabi. Don’t worry … I’ll give you a good deal. 😀
