Finally … after a very long while, the completion of my Instax 200 camera hack … version 1.0
I ripped out the lens from my Instax 200 camera (okay, that sounds a bit violent, please don’t try that at home) and then ‘replaced’ it with a lens from a broken TLR camera. Why would anyone wanna do that???!!! Here’s why …
1. I wanna have more choice of shutter speeds in that instant camera aka Instax 200
2. I wanna have bulb mode (yes, it has bulb mode!)
3. I’m bored
4. I’m crazy
Enough of long stories. Here are some photos of the ‘camera’ itself. Sorry for the pretty ugly state it’s in … I’ll settle the cosmetic issues later. The camera now looks kinda freaky ain’t it?
The begining (these photos were taken a couple of months ago when I first started the hack)
After the ‘implant’ … the TLR lens replaces the original one on the Instax
Does it work? Oh yeah … it does! Here are some shots from the first test …
That’s all for now. I’ll find more time to figure out if I can settle the black round ring (vignetting?) problem and of course settle the cosmetic issues. I’ll definitely do a little DIY guide later on, in case someone else out there might wanna try doing so too. However, please note that my DIY guide might not necessary mean Do It Yourself … it could end up as ‘Damage It Yourself’.
You are genius!
YOU ARE CRAZY!!!
This TLR lens doesn’t really “fit” the camera. LOL
Kahong, I ain’t no genius but I’ve got 10 itchy fingers 😀
Cin, of course the lens won’t fit. They don’t make/sell Instax lenses like they do for DSLRs 😀
*roll eyes* I meant it doesn’t look good with that extra hole above. *roll eyes*
Yeah, Cin … I know … just jokin. Well maybe later I’ll add another lens there so I can push the front up and down to change between a wide and tele lens? Muwahahaha!
hahaha I can’t wait to see it!
ok it looks *&^% but the images are FANTASTIC haha…
u’re the man!
Hello! Great mod – I wish I were confident/competant enough to do it myself.
I was wondering if you’ve tried to see if you could get the shutter to fire with no film in the camera and the back open. I’m guessing there are just a few pins that need to be pushed, but I’m afraid of breaking my camera…. What I want to do is open it up and tape on a x3 lens to the front, then determine focus with a piece of wax paper across the back… the old Holga trick…
Have you ever tried this or do you have any advice?
thanks
Erik
Erik,
I’ve not touched the cam for a long time, but I do remember that when you load a pack of film, there is a lever/switch thingie that tells the cam that a pack of film is loaded. Can’t confirm til I take a look at it again. Haha! Have fun with your mod and do remember to let us know how it turns out.
right on, I’ll take a look when I’ve shot the rest of the pack.
great site ndroo, keep up the good work!
Hi,..
long time later,.. i have a question
If you take off the lens, you can come back again to original camera??
Please, ..tell a little more about ..
Thanks!
@Javier : I don’t think I’m able to put back the lens and get it back working like normal. The mechanism is pretty complex (to me, who doesn’t know about these mechanical/electronic stuffs). I remember there are a couple of ribbon cables that I actually cut and some plastic parts were broken in the process. 😀 I’m still finding time to continue work on this mod. 😀
Nice mod.
Do you have a tutorial on how to take the instax apart? Need it to proceed with DIY also….
Thanks and keep up the exploring!
@Zhenjie : Sorry I do not have any photo or video on how I operated on the Instax. Hands were too busy. One thing to note is that there is a ribbon cable to the rotating lens barrel. That is one you might not want to cut. I cut it in another camera and then the camera refused to work! 🙁 Not sure why though.
