Brought my family out for dim sum breakfast at Chinatown this morning and lugged my E-P1 along hoping to be able to take some (more) test shots. Fortunately we arrived at the restaurant earlier and there wasn’t too big a crowd yet. Fitzand had lots of prawns and seemed to enjoy eating ‘xiao long pao’ (some steamed chinese dumpling) and later he was busy playing near the entrance where there were some drums and a gong there.
Auto focus was fast indoors even when lighting wasn’t that good. The 17mm f2.8 pancake lens was used.
Weather was crazy. It looked really gloomy when we arrived and by the time we left the restaurant, it was pretty sunny but started to drizzle. We had to rush to the car and thus I had only oppportunity to take a couple of random shots while carrying Fitzand and running to the carpark.
We were heading to Orchard Rd for some shopping when Fitzand fell asleep in the car and we had to head home instead to let him rest. While he was taking his noon nap, I toyed with some ideas for some experimental shots (on film) but just scribbled them down instead of doing it because I was just too lazy.
We wanted to bring Fitzand down to Clare Quay so that we can also have our dinner there at Brewerkz (yeah … fresh cold beer!) but ended up near the Esplanade instead. There was the national day celebration rehearsal going on and we thought we might as well enjoy our drinks/dinner there while letting Fitzand see the parachutes, planes, choppers, boats and stuffs. He enjoyed his dinner (especially the organic apple juice) and of course the rehearsal.
Of course I took the opportunity again to take more photos with my E-P1 but not of the rehearsal stuffs. Why? Do you think I can take proper photos of planes zooming past with my 17mm lens?
The little devil had big fun at the dinner table …
“Daddy … Cheers!!!”
It’s a little bit too challenging photographing Fitzand with the pancake lens because I’ll have to be pretty close to him and I’ll need to be on full alert in case me makes a dash for my camera or throws something at it.
So how do I like the E-P1 so far? After today’s few shootings sessions, I do have more findings about it. Not all positive ones though. Maybe I’ll write about it tomorrow or the day after. I’m tired now.
i’d love to own this PEN if only it’s not that crazily expensive…
@kanki : If you consider the prices of other entry level DSLRs, the Pen ain’t that too expensive. Right? 😛
looks like the lens performs well in low light condition. I’m interested to see if double exposure in this digital Pen is any good.
@Patrick : I’ve messed with the other ‘art effects’ on the cam but yet to try the double exposure. Haha. I still prefer doing doubles on film but perhaps I should try out the double exposure thingie on the E-P1 soon.
I’m tempted. dpreview said the focusing speed is low (when they tested the prototype). I hate slow focusing, like my current Ricoh GX-200, I hope this Pen’s focusing speed is close to Canon’s compact. BTW, which color of this e-p1 you got?
@Patrick : I’ve not read the review. Were they using the zoom kit lens? I was told that lens performs a little slow during AF. I got the 17mm pancake lens only and I find it pretty fast even in low light. I got the white version … because … I … find … it … prettier. Hehehe. I’m so vain.
hahah, I would choose white as well, for the same reason.
I don’t remember where I get the idea of it being slow, now that I can’t find the info anymore, here’s some reference for you:

I will have to go check E-p1 in store to try myself. Again, hate Ricoh’s noise and slow focusing.
@Patrick : Yeah … go try it out and find out for yourself. I was referring to the 17mm lens only though. I did not get the other zoom lens because I want my E-P1 to stay slim (unlike myself). So far, the many friends I know who are using the same combo are very happy with the AF speed.
Wats the meaning of Lomo? Saw some intro as Lomo Holga, Lomo Diana+? Btw, where’s Ruby in Peninsula Plaza? Any nearest shop which is nearby the city? Wish to buy E-P1 hopefully nope darn expensive.
@Sherry Valerie : I’m afraid you will have to seach online for the definition of Lomo. Too long story to type here. Ruby Photo’s address is as follows …
3 Coleman Street, #01-01 / 01-02, Peninsula Hotel Shopping Complex, Singapore 179804
Ph : 6338 0236 , 6338 4104
Don’t ask me how to get there. Go check the maps. 😀
hahaha. can totally imagine fitzand whacking your new baby.
“daddy~ fish~” throw fish: ends up on the 17mm (not~ it doesn’t make it a fish eye)
hrmm, digital question:
images are post processed? or tuned on camera?
if it’s on camera~~~ arrggghhhhhh~~~~~
i better control.
and i will wait for black version.
arrrgggghhhhh~~
@saklas : These went through the basic simple post processing that I usually do. 😀 A little of curves, a little of brightness or sometimes auto level. I’ve yet find time to try setting those stuffs in camera but I think with some tweaking … pretty good straight out of cam pics should be possible. 😀
ndroo, I went to play with Pen today and the speed is far far better than I thought, especially when I compare it with my Ricoh GX200. I’m selling my Ricoh (http://hk.f1.page.auctions.yahoo.com/hk/auction/1119684570) and definitely going to get PEN!
I tried a zoom lens other than the 17mm, speed is great. Double exposure is not interesting at all though.
Thanks!
@Patrick : Cool! Glad you find it good. Welcome to the world of E-P1! 😀
