Instant Back!

Those guys at Lomography are some real clever devils! They married their Diana cameras with the Fujifilm’s Instax instant film … and … created a Diana Instant Back that uses the mini Instax film. Now that’s something I definitely want. I’ve long drooled for the Holga’s instant back that uses Polaroid/FP-100 film packs but after considering the cost of the back and the film, I decided to avoid it.

This back is definitely gonna make photography with the Diana camera more fun and of course make our wallets lighter by having to buy the Instax mini film packs.

  • Easily clips onto the back of the Diana F+
  • Expose the film as usual using the Diana controls and then press the release button on the rear of the Instant Back to get your photo.
  • Compatible with all Diana F+ cameras
  • Tripod ‘Ears’ for steady shooting and long exposures.
  • Uses Fuji Instax Mini film –only!
  • Automatic film number counter
  • Battery operated – 2x CR2 batteries (not included)
  • Tripod thread

With this, I am very sure the interchangable back that they promised for the Lubitel 166+ is gonna be a instant back too. Wonder if it will use the Instax mini or the wide film though.

  1. @Ben : Yeah … it’s a big time poison but way cool. I understand that you can do double exposures with it too!!!! Mine has arrived just in time for my HK trip this week! Yay! Time to stock up some film.

  2. to ndroo… YOU BOUGHT IT ALR?!! Who is selling it here in SG?!?! jimmy, you bringin in?!

  3. you got it? coolness. is 8storeytree selling it? doesnt seem to be…

  4. @Miles : Thanks for the link but can you share with us on how to go about doing it? It’s really very cool!!

@wenlin : I’m not sure if 8storeytree has it now but I’m damn sure it’s gonna sell like hot cakes there if they do have it. Haha.

  5. Okay, here’s how I do it.

When using an Instax camera loaded with a film pack, turn on the camera and open the back cover. Unlike most other instant cameras (like many polaroid models), you will still be able to operate the shutter and therefore take pictures.
Take an exposure, but the instant the shutter clicks and the film has been exposed, tilt the bottom of the film pack out of the camera body slightly so the little electronically-controlled hook in the camera body doesn’t catch the picture and push it out through the rollers. Push the film pack back into the body after the little hook has reset. You can take as many exposures as you want this way, provided you’ve got nimble, able hands. Once you think your shot has been exposed enough times, just take another picture, but don’t tilt out the pack, and allow the picture to be pushed out and developed as normal.

Just be careful not to tilt the film out too far when doing this or there will obviously be light leaks, which tend to bleach areas into frayed pink tones. I think it looks kind of neat, but I understand that a lot of people are against them.

    Example: http://www.flickr.com/photos/nirazilla/3328261784/in/set-72157613155597803/

You can do this with any Instax model, meaning it’s applicable to the 200, Mini and any other units you may know of or have. Try it! I don’t think enough people know how quick and simple instant multiple exposures can be!

  6. @Miles : Hey thanks a million! That’s a really cool trick and I’m gonna give it a go soon after I forget the damage to my wallet on the packs Instax film burned on the Diana back during my HK trip. Thanks.

  7. hello, do you still going to hong kong? or do you have extra diana F with instant back. i would like to buy but i think it’s not available in singapore. er, btw, how much does it cost?

  8. @MIN : No plans to HK for the time being. You can find the Diana F+ here but you might need to check if stores like Ruby or Objektifs carry the instant back. Otherwise, try ordering from Lomo Asia. I got my Instant Back from Lomo Intl store.

  9. @MIN : Ermmm … no idea if the stores have it already but if only you had contacted me earlier, I could have help you order one of these pinhole cam when I placed my order not long ago. 😛

  10. @MIN : Just go to Lomo Asia’s website, go to the store section … add in the item(s) you wanna buy and check out. It will then show you the total amount payable. You can cancel it before making payment … so there you have it … the price to pay for the toys. 😀

  11. OMG I so happen to pass by your blog while searching for an instant cam. I was actually contemplating whether to buy a Lomo or a ‘Polaroid’ turns out that this is the best deal. any recommendation to buy the Diana instant back besides the Lomo Asia website? I’m a student on a tight budget btw 😀

  12. Hi,

I have a brand new diana instant back. Never opened, and I’m selling it for Php 5,500 (110 us dollars) but still negotiable. 🙂 Send me an email (leannitorreda@yahoo.com) with the title: INQUIRIES ABOUT THE INSTANT BACK. I can send you photos as well 🙂

    Thanks!

  13. @Vic : Sorry for the late reply. I somehow missed this entry’s comment til now. If you are from Singapore, you can check out ThirtySix at Sunshine Plaza. I heard that they’ll be carrying Lomo stuffs too. As for pricing … don’t think prices vary much from shop to shop.

@Martina : Good luck on your sales.
