Woody Holga : My first ever attempt at dressing up a camera. Sold it off in a charity sale.
Postage-free Holga : A stamp covered Holga with a coat of clear paint. It was pretty challenging working with those old stamps as they were very fragile.

Firstly … it was supposed to be a ‘one piece only’ when I sold it and secondly … I don’t really like doing the same thing again. Hope you understand. I’ve been saying this but maybe I can *cough* repeat it again … I’m trying to find time to work on some new designs/ideas but … *cough* free time is something that is hardly in my vocabulary anymore. 😀

We always reeembmr our first.Plastic camera, that is. Mine was a modified Holga. I ordered it while working on a long-term, out-of-town project in Greenville, Texas. Aimlessly surfing the net one afternoon, I found some images made with a toy plastic camera of a cemetery in New York City. I was mesmerized. A few clicks and a couple of Google searches later, I purchased what would become my precious Holgy. That pile of plastic and a fistful of film were waiting for me when I returned home. I was immediately sent to Pascagoula, Mississippi on a new project, so that is the city where I lost my toy camera virginity. At first, I thought my return to film-based photography was, like Proust’s madeleine, a remembrance of things past. I certainly realized how sterile digital photography was compared to the tactile experience of inserting a roll of 120. I also relished the sweet pain of delayed gratification mailing the film off to a lab in California and waiting and waiting and waiting for the return of my prints. That four years and countless rolls of film ago. Today, I am the steward of a second Holga (one can never have too many), a niew Diana+, an original Diana, a Banner, and an Arrow (thank God for eBay), as well as a Horizon 202 panoramic. I define myself as a toy camera photographer, to which most people respond with Huh? or What’s that? followed by Why? My response usually includes something about obtaining images possible only with the combination of film and low-fi optics and the unpredictable nature of the two.But that changed two months ago. That is when my mother asked me to help her clean out her storage room. One large tub was filled with old family photos. And there, in all that deckle-edged, black and white, Kodak Brownie blurriness, was my toy camera A-ha moment. It was a truly Freudian experience. Sometimes a plastic camera is more than a plastic camera. It is a return to my childhood. Like a long-forgotten dream, I realize how those images informed my memory of my childhood. There I am in all my out-of-focus, snapshot glory, playing with the garden hose, petting my beagle, Pete, standing next to my pet duck, Ducky Doodle, in a shallow wading pool, holding my great-grandmother’s hand, and showing off my new pair of cowboy boots. No wonder I cherish the portrait I took of my youngest son last winter, standing with my old Flexible Flyer sled. Except for the Gap sweatshirt, it could just as easily have been of me 35 years ago.That is why now that I have gone plastic, I can never really go back. And, why I will always reeembmr my first.

Lovely work. Does the Blackbird Fly come apart easy enough to cover in stickers like that? I have been debating getting one with the intention of repainting it, but i’m not sure if you can take the front colour face off to do so, and I’m not sure how fiddly it’ll be painting around the two lenses.
@Batman : I did not take apart the BBF to cover it in stickers. That made doing it a lot harder but I was reluctant to take it apart, fearing that it might be hell putting it together again. Many delicate parts in there. If you are painting it, why not try tape up the lenses before you start painting? That might save you lots of time (and headache).
